Cheryl has hit out at social media critics who have blamed her mother for the star’s split with Liam Payne.
The pair, who have a one-year-old son together, announced on Sunday that they were calling it quits after two-and-a-half years.
The pop musician has insisted that her mother had “absolutely nothing” to do with it, after claims swirled on Twitter and Facebook.
She posted a statement on Twitter, saying the stories were “nasty” and “false”.
The singer, 35, wrote: “I hate responding to stuff, esp at such difficult times but I cannot sit here and listen to such nasty, false articles regarding my mam.
“I don’t know why they involve her in stories about me.
“I can assure you she has absolutely nothing to do with any of it.
“She is a soft and kind woman who doesn’t deserve to be dragged into something that has nothing whatsoever to do with her.”
Cheryl also announced her split with Payne in a similar manner, posting on the social media site: “We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It’s been a tough decision for us to make. We still have so much love for each other as a family.
“Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.” Bear is the couple’s one-year-old son.
Their relationship began in 2016, after the pop star first met Payne in 2008 when she was 25 and he was a 14-year-old hopeful auditioning for The X Factor.
They stayed together for two years, and had Bear in March 2017, which was soon followed by rumours that all was not well in the relationship.
Asked what his partner was called, Payne explained: “Her name is officially Cheryl Tweedy now, but to be honest it doesn’t really bother me. We have a kid together. There’s a lot more in our life.”
