Donald Trump offered a fresh olive branch to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, saying it would be a “good thing” if the two men met.
Speaking at a press conference in Hanoi he reiterated his willingness to sit down with Kim while at the same time stepping up his attacks on Pyongyang.
Asked if he believed a meeting could happen, Mr Trump responded: “Anything is possible. Strange things happen in life.
“If that happened it would be good for North Korea. It would be a good thing for the world. I don’t know if it will happen, but it would be a good thing if it did.”
Earlier in the day, Mr Trump took exception, on Twitter, to the North Koreans calling him old – tweeting that he would never call Kim “short and fat.”
The US president called on other countries to support the US in curbing Pyongyang, warning of the consequences if nothing was done.
“All responsible nations must now ensure that North Korea’s rogue regime stops threatening the world with unthinkable loss of life.
Trump says Putin’s insulted by election interference claims
“We have been provoked, the whole world has been provoked. We want stability, not chaos. We want peace, not war.”
“What he believes is what he believes,” Mr Trump told reporters as he tried to draw a line under the controversy, despite saying he that he agreed with the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment on Russian meddling in last year’s U.S. election.
“I want to get on with Russia, to get on with China, to get on with Vietnam.”
“Frankly Russia and China to help us with the North Korean problem. We have to work together to solve Syria, solve Ukraine, solve terrorism.
“Russia has been heavily sanctioned. Now it is time to get back to healing world which is shattered and broken. Having Russian in a friendly posture and not fighting with us is a healthy thing for the world.”
